Dragon fame Ashwath Marimuthu in talks to direct Rajinikanth’s Thalaivar 173: Report
After the script was narrated by several directors over the past few months, reports now suggest that Dragon director Ashwath Marimuthu has emerged as the frontrunner for Rajinikanth’s next film, tentatively titled Thalaivar 173.

According to reports, Ashwath Marimuthu recently narrated a complete script to Rajinikanth, which the actor has liked. The screenplay has been described as an entertaining, emotionally driven film in line with the director’s earlier work.
Although no formal confirmation has been made yet, it is believed that several rounds of discussions have taken place. The project will be produced by Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International, with an official announcement expected soon.

Before Ashwath Marimuthu came to the forefront, several other filmmakers including Lokesh Kanagaraj, Parking director Ramkumar Balakrishnan and Maharaja director Nithilan Saminathan had narrated the script for the superstar’s next project, which Ramkumar and Nithilan were said to be seriously considering at various points. With reports now strongly pointing towards Ashwath Marimuthu, fans are eagerly waiting for an official confirmation on who will finally direct the superstar’s next film.
Currently Rajinikanth is completely busy shooting jailer 2Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. The sequel to the 2023 blockbuster is expected to include a number of major names and is scheduled for theatrical release in August 2026.
