Raj Babbar remembers Smita Patil on her 39th death anniversary: Gave us so little time
Actor-politician Raj Babbar shared a deeply emotional tribute to his late wife Smita Patil on her 39th death anniversary. He praised his deep empathy and described his quality of being “exceptionally nice” both on and off screen as the key to his greatness as an actor.

But On the 39th death anniversary of his late wife Smita Patil, veteran actor-politician Raj Babbar shared an emotional tribute on social media reflecting on the time they spent together. In his post he also praised Smita’s qualities as an actor and a person.
Her Instagram post read, “What made #SmitaPatil a truly great actress were the same qualities that defined her off-screen – she was exceptionally good. Her deep empathy portrayed the struggles of common people, turning simple stories into soul-stirring songs for justice. She graced us for such a short time, yet countless hearts still resonate with her essence. You gave us so little time to know you. This mystery Will always be vague. Remembering Smita on her death anniversary (sic).”

Smita and Raj Babbar’s son Prateik Smita Patil also paid tribute to his late mother on her Instagram story. He shared a garlanded photo of his mother and captioned it, “13th December, 2025 (sic).” He also shared actor Jackie Shroff’s tribute to Smita on his Instagram story, which read, “Remembering Smita Patil ji on her death anniversary. Always in our hearts (sic).”

Smita’s unique art was her ability to play characters with raw, unwavering honesty, which defined the core of her short but explosive career. His work is listed in over 80 films, a continuing exploration of the diverse human experience.
She rose to prominence with critically acclaimed films like Nishant (1975) and churn (1976), both directed by Shyam Benegal. his success came with Role (1977), a checkered biography which won him the National Award. This was followed by powerful social dramas such as outrage (1980), which focused on tribal oppression, and cycle (1981), where his portrayal of a slum dweller won him a second National Award.
Smita made iconic appearances in other landmark films of parallel cinema: the complex marital drama Arth (1982), the political satire Market (1983), gritty vulture (1984), and definitive feminist works chilli masala (1987).
Demonstrating her versatility, she also excelled in mainstream cinema, starring opposite Amitabh Bachchan in box office hits such as Shakti and Shakti. Faithful (both 1982), and with Dilip Kumar laborer (1983).
