Pinkvilla has exclusively learned that after fifteen years, 3 Idiots is finally set to return with a sequel that will bring back its iconic cast. The much awaited film starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, R. It will mark the reunion of Madhavan and Sharman Joshi, and will be directed by Rajkumar Hirani, with Hirani and Aamir Khan along with Vidhu Vinod Chopra backing the project.
A source close to the development revealed that the sequel will go on floors in the second half of 2026. An insider confirmed, “The script has been locked, and the team is extremely excited about it. They feel that the magic of the first film is back, and it is just as fun, emotional and meaningful as the first part.”
The source further added, “The story will be a continuation, starting approximately 15 years after the characters go their separate ways in the climactic scene and re-unite for a new adventure.” Well, audiences will get to see the nostalgic charm of Rancho, Farhan, Raju and Piya with new humor that will reflect their adult journeys.
A little insider tells us, Rajkumar Hirani, who has been mulling over the idea of a sequel for a long time, recently found the right time to revisit it after the Dadasaheb Phalke biopic got stalled. "He devoted time to expanding the 3 Idiots sequel into a full screenplay. Hirani always had an idea for 3 Idiots 2, but he wanted it to be perfect and something that lived up to the legacy of the original,” the source revealed.
Released in 2009, 3 Idiots became a cult classic and started a discussion on India’s education system. It created history as the first Indian film to enter the Rs 200 crore club and set new standards for Bollywood.
Reuniting with the dream team, Kareena, Aamir Khan and others for a much-awaited story that promises both nostalgia and freshness, 3 Idiots 2 is already one of the most anticipated films of the decade.
On a related note, Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani have reportedly put their Dadasaheb Phalke biopic on hold for the time being as they are not happy with the script.
