No job even after 2000 applications and loan of Rs 40 lakh, Indian techie returns from US in search of job in India
An Indian techie has opened up about his struggle to find a job in the US. After more than 2,000 applications and a student loan of Rs 40 lakh, the man failed to get a job, and decided to return to India.

In India, working in the IT sector is one of the most lucrative careers, especially if you get a job in the US. We have often heard uncles and aunties saying that getting education from America can ultimately make your life better. But sometimes the reality may be completely different. This was also the case with an Indian employee who follows the online persona u/mhdmab. The user shared his story on the subreddit r/developersindia.
The user completed his master’s degree in Management Information Systems in the US in May 2025. However, despite applying for over 2,000 job listings, one faced many hurdles in getting a good job.
According to u/mhdmab, the job search included “job hunting, referrals, networking, recruiters, cold emails and everything possible but nothing worked.” Although the guy got a few interviews with some big companies, nothing progressed.
Is the American job market becoming difficult for Indians?
Another thing that users pointed out was the difficulties for immigrants in getting jobs in the US. “As time went on, the job market (especially for immigrants on OPT) got worse. Interview calls gradually began to decrease and eventually stopped almost completely,” the person said. Ultimately, the individual decided to take on the role of data analyst in order to “remain employed and productive.”
Despite securing a contract as a data analyst, the Reddit user noted that the position was not in line with his long-term goals. “I realized that my skill set was being very underutilized. I wasn’t getting the experience with the technologies, engineering challenges, or learning curve that I really wanted.”

Users got fed up with the stress of being in a job they didn’t like at a time when better opportunities were disappearing and decided to come back to India. He also said that there are other Indians in similar positions abroad. He further said, “There are many of us who are or have been in this position, but I had to take a decision. After much thought, I recently decided to move back to India and resume my job search from here with new focus and full energy.”
Indian employee faces financial pressure of Rs 40 lakh student loan
It is not unusual for students to take loans for higher education, especially abroad. However, if one fails to get a job, things become quite stressful when it comes to repaying the loan. In this case, the technician has a debt of Rs 40 lakh, which he has to repay, whatever his circumstances.
While the users returned to Bengaluru, they admitted that it would be difficult to repay the loan even if they got a job in India. “Many Indian recruiters do not value a US degree without full-time experience, and repaying the loan with an Indian salary will be an uphill battle,” the person said.

Before pursuing his Master’s, User worked as a software engineer in a multinational company in India for almost two years and earned a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. They are now looking for SDE or Analyst roles. The tech expert has also asked for help from other Redditors. The person concluded, “If you’re reading this and know of any openings, referrals, recruiting for early stage startups, or even guidance based on your experience, anything would really mean a lot to me.”
