Meet Indian-origin AI veteran Amar Subramaniam, who is joining Apple as new VP to drive AI strategy
Amar Subramaniam is an Indian-born AI expert who recently joined Apple as the new AI Vice President. Subramaniam is a graduate from Bangalore University and has worked for companies like Google DeepMind and Microsoft.
On Monday, Apple announced that Indian-origin AI veteran Amar Subramaniam will take over the role of AI vice president at the Cupertino giant, replacing John Giannandrea. Subramaniam’s arrival is a big win for Apple given his previous experience in the world of artificial intelligence. He joins the tech giant at a time when it is struggling to compete with companies like Google and OpenAI.
Abar Subramaniam will lead AI development at Apple and report to software chief Craig Federighi. According to Reuters, he will lead areas such as Apple Foundation models and machine learning.

Who is Abar Subramaniam?
According to Abar Subramaniam’s LinkedIn profile, he joined Apple after a brief stint of about 5 months as Corporate Vice President of AI at Microsoft. Interestingly, this was his second stint at the Redmond giant, having initially been a trainee in 2005.
But Subramaniam has spent a large part of his career at Google. He started his journey at the company in 2009 as a Staff Research Scientist and rose to VP of Engineering. During his tenure at Google, he led the development of the Gemini AI assistant. He left Google for Microsoft in June this year.
Where did Abar Subramaniam study?
Abar Subramaniam completed his Bachelor of Engineering (BE) from Bangalore University in 2001. Subsequently, he joined IBM as a software engineer for a 10-month stint, before taking a career hiatus. He then completed his PhD from the University of Wisconsin.
