Actor Scarlett Johansson is set to star in the upcoming installment of the ‘Exorcist’ film series, with Universal and Blumhouse-Atomic Monsters producing the project. The announcement was made as Universal continued its efforts to revive the long-running horror franchise. Mike Flanagan, known for his work on ‘Doctor Sleep’ and ‘The Life of Chuck’, has signed on to write, direct and produce the film, which is being described as a significant reimagining of the series.

The original ‘Exorcist’ film directed by William Friedkin premiered in 1973 and became a landmark of the horror genre. It tells the story of a mother, played by Ellen Burstyn, who enlists the help of two priests to exorcise her possessed daughter, played by Linda Blair. The film achieved both critical and commercial success, grossing $441 million worldwide and receiving ten Academy Award nominations.

Johansson’s casting follows Universal’s previous attempt to launch a new trilogy, following its acquisition of the rights in 2021 for $400 million. The first film in this endeavor, 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, recasts Ellen Burstyn as Chris McNeil and introduces new characters. Despite grossing $136 million globally, the film did not generate enough momentum to sustain a trilogy.

The new film will be set in the same setting as the original 1973 release, but is not a sequel to ‘Believer’. Details regarding the plot and additional cast are unknown. According to people involved with the project, production is scheduled to take place in New York City.

Director Mike Flanagan expressed his excitement for Johansson’s involvement, saying, “Scarlett is a fantastic actress whose captivating performances always feel grounded and genuine, from genre films to summer blockbusters, and I couldn’t be happier to have her cast in this ‘Exorcist’ film.” Flanagan is known for his unique approach to the horror genre.

Johansson has recently contributed to the revival of other major franchises, including Universal’s ‘Jurassic World Rebirth,’ which achieved $868 million in global ticket sales earlier this year. His performance in that project was noted as a key factor in its commercial success.

In addition to her work as an actress, Johansson made her directorial debut with ‘Eleanor the Great’, a drama film starring June Squibb, which was released at the beginning of the year. She is also recognized for her Academy Award-nominated performances in ‘Marriage Story’ and ‘Jojo Rabbit’.

Universal and Blumhouse are expected to make further announcements about the upcoming ‘Exorcist’ film as development progresses, including release dates and casting news.
