Elon Musk-owned social platform The company has introduced a transparency feature called “About this Account”, which reveals background details about a profile’s history, from when it was created to how it joined the app. The goal is to help users distinguish real people from bots and AI-generated accounts that have become increasingly convincing.

This feature displays information such as the account’s base location, how many times the username has been changed, the date of original joining, and whether the app was downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. In theory, this additional context should make it easier to identify suspicious or deceptive activity.

The tool was first teased in October by Nikita Bear, head of product for X, who tested it on his profile. He described it as “a way to give people enough contextual information to decide whether an account is legitimate or attempting to spread misinformation.” For example, if someone claims to tweet from California but their activity originates overseas, the discrepancy could be a red flag.

Over the past week, more X users have seen this feature appear on their profiles. Bear recently responded to calls for stronger transparency measures with a promise to deliver within 72 hours, and that appears to have been followed through.

Accessing the new panel is simple. On both the web and mobile versions of These details, although minimal, can provide valuable clues about whether an account has been recently renovated, rebranded, or is otherwise suspicious.

Limited rollout for now

At present, the rollout is still in its initial stages. According to TechCrunch, many users can view their account data, but the same panel is not yet visible when checking other profiles. This slow release appears to be intentional, giving users a chance to confirm that their information is accurate before it becomes publicly viewable.

Privacy settings remain flexible. Under the Privacy & Security menu, users can choose whether to display their specific country or a broader region instead. This allows individuals to share enough information for transparency without compromising their security.

The move brings X in line with other social platforms that have already introduced similar tools. For example, Instagram has long displayed “About this account” details such as country, name change, and advertising activity. X’s version appears to take inspiration from that model and adapt it to its own ecosystem of creators, influencers, and pseudonymous users.

As misinformation and AI-generated content continue to spread online, X’s new transparency feature is a clear attempt to strike a balance between openness and privacy. Whether this can meaningfully curb fake accounts or simply add another layer of digital curiosity remains to be seen, but at least now, users are a little more aware of who is really behind the posts filling their timelines.
