Three films will be released this week: Masti 4, 120 Bahadur and Gustakh Ishq. However, none of the three are expected to make any kind of debut and will be dependent on post-release reception for any kind of performance.
Masti 4 is the fourth installment of the adult comedy series Masti. There was a time when the adult comedy genre was doing well in the last decade, and during this period the biggest hit of the genre came in 2013 with Grand Masti, the second film in this franchise. That film took a strong start and was a superhit. However, the genre declined in the latter half of the decade perhaps due to the advent of mobile internet and has remained so ever since. The progress of Masti 4 has been disappointing as expected, with less than 3000 tickets sold across the national chains. This is not a film that can’t rely on post-release response, but it will have to if it has to succeed.
120 Bahadur is a film based on the India-China war of 1962. This is also a case of a genre film that generally doesn’t score. The few exceptions that exist were driven by star value or curiosity factor for the events on which the film was based, neither of which 120 Brave Commands does. The film’s progress was low, with only about 4000 tickets sold in national chains. Advance amounts outside national chains are even lower. The film was previewed on Wednesday to boost WOM promotion, but it doesn’t seem to have made any impact, at least judging by the progress. Unlike Masti 4, if the response is positive then this film may pick up the weekend.
The stalled film De De Pyaar De 2 is expected to remain the top film this weekend, even though it has not performed that well. There is also a Hollywood film, Wicked: For Good, which will do huge business in the West, but it is not a film that does well in India.
