Super Mario Galaxy movie trailer shows Mario’s space exploration with Rosalina
Nintendo and Illumination have released the first look at their highly anticipated 2026 sequel, which sees Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Jack Black returning along with newcomers Brie Larson and Benny Safdie.
Nintendo, Illumination and Universal have released the trailer for ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’. The reveal came during a Nintendo Direct livestream on Wednesday morning.
‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ trailer reveals Rosalina, played by Brie Larson, and Bowser Jr., played by Benny Safdie. The film, which is set to release in theaters in April 2026, is the sequel to the successful 2023 adaptation. “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” will be released in theaters in April 2026.

The trailer begins with Mario and Luigi taunting super-tiny Bowser, who ate a mini mushroom at the end of the first film and became the Plumber Brothers’ little prisoner. After Bowser draws a romantic portrait of himself and his beloved Peach and is rejected by Mario, the real action begins.
Mario and Peach see dozens of shooting stars in the sky, then head towards the stars with Luigi and Toad. Like the “Super Mario Galaxy” video games, they travel through different planets, including one made entirely of water and a desert planet with inverted pyramids (from 2017’s ‘Super Mario Odyssey’) that Mario and Luigi visit by zooming on a bike.
‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ is based on the widely popular ‘Super Mario Galaxy’ released on the Nintendo Wii in 2007. The game is widely considered not only one of the best mainline Mario platformers, but one of the best video games of all time.
While plot details for the film are scant, ‘Super Mario Galaxy’ sees the titular plumber traveling the universe on a mission to collect enough Power Stars to allow him to travel to the center of the universe, where the evil Bowser has imprisoned Princess Peach. ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’, released in April 2023, was a hit at the box office. The film grossed $1.3 billion worldwide and is currently the fifth-highest-grossing animated film behind ‘Ne Zha 2,’ ‘Inside Out 2,’ ‘The Lion King,’ and ‘Frozen II.’
Aaron Horvath and Michael Zelenik return to direct ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’. Matthew Fogel has also returned to write the script. The heroes encounter Bowser’s son, Bowser Jr., and also meet the fierce Princess Rosalina. Rosalina is voiced by Brie Larson, and Bowser Jr. is voiced by Benny Safdie.
Like the 2002 game ‘Super Mario Sunshine’, Bowser Jr. is equipped with a magical paintbrush which he uses to wrap himself in metal and launch it as a flail. Meanwhile, Rosalina uses her magic wand to single-handedly take down the spider-like robot. Stars Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad) and Charlie Day (Luigi) all return for the sequel.
