During a recent conversation, Deepika Padukone talked about her experiences in Hollywood. She highlighted the stereotypes about India in the West and discussed the challenges she faced, including being offered stereotypical roles and facing colorism.

Actress Deepika Padukone has opened up about her experience in Hollywood and recalled how she often faced stereotypes and colour-based prejudices despite her success in Indian cinema. Speaking at an event recently, the actor revealed that he was repeatedly offered stereotypical roles inspired by old notions of India and its people.
Reflecting on his visit at an event organized by cnbc tv18Deepika shared that she made a conscious choice to represent India on her own terms rather than fit into Western expectations. “I would say it was very deliberate. I was very clear about taking India to the world, but the India I know,” she said, “for example, going to Hollywood and doing certain things that are expected of us or that are appropriate for a global audience, was something I never wanted to do.”
Deepika, who made her Hollywood debut with Vin Diesel in ‘XXX: Return of Xander Cage’ (2017), said she soon realized how limited the industry’s understanding of India was. She added, “I think the thing that bothered me whenever I went to the West was their idea of India. It’s so different from the country I know. I’ve experienced all those stereotypes first-hand. Whether it has to do with casting, or whether it has to do with our accent or the color of my skin.”
The actor shared that while taking a more authentic path meant slower recognition, it was a conscious choice. She said, “I was very clear that I was going to do it my way and on my terms. Did it take longer? Yes, it did.”
Remembering his global campaign for louis vuittonDeepika explained what this means to her personally. Padukone said, “When I saw my face on a billboard across Sunset Boulevard, it felt weird – but also good. It was a proud moment. To see brown faces up there for a global luxury brand felt like a win for every Indian woman.”
