General Z protesters have chosen the next Nepal PM through vote on vote, what is discord and how it is used
Nepal’s anti -corruption protests led by General Z activists topped the KP Sharma Oli government. Now, General Z is using a US-based social media app to decide on the next leader of the country.

Nepal is in the period of turmoil. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s government, after banning 26 social media apps including Instagram and Facebook, took General Z protesters on the streets. The protests soon became violent, with at least 51 dead.
The young protesters of Nepal say that they want to end the years of alleged corruption under the country’s rule. There is no confidence in Oli and other political leaders, General Z is at an intersection to decide its next leader. This is where the protesters come to the online platform discord.
What is a discord?
Dysord was launched in May 2015 as a social platform by co-founders Jason Citron, and Stanislav Vishnevsky. Both Citron and Vishnevskiy made social platforms for the first gamers and expected to create a chat service that would not hinder the performance while playing the game.
During the early days of the discord, the forum focused on allowing users to communicate with their friends without getting out of a game. By the end of 2016, the discord had more than 25 million users.
The stage exploded in popularity during the epidemic, especially between General Z. Users did not just stick to use the app during gaming. Rather, more and more discord servers were created on the basis of various topics of interest.
The app now calls itself a communication platform where users can engage in the discussion on servers, through various channels. There are also options for screen sharing, streaming as well as moderation tools.
A discord server is a large community location where users can collect and set several channels to communicate. Channels can also be in text, audio or video. The user’s limit on the Discard server may be more than 5,00,000 by default.
However, only 2,50,000 users can be active on the server at any time.
How did General Z protesters use discord?
General Z protesters have used discord to manage their performances. Following Oli’s resignation, members used the youth against the corruption server of corruption to decide their next leader.
As shown by the Osint team of India Today, corruption servers against the youth are more than 1,30,000 members. There is no real way to verify the location of these members.
The server held several elections to decide on the next Nepal leader, in which the users were voting as per their choice. However, there was no way to verify that all users in the voting process were actually from Nepal.
The report of India Today’s Ossint team showed that any person outside Nepal can vote.
By Wednesday, September 10, the server had reached a consensus on the next leader of Nepal. Former Chief Justice of Nepal Sushila Karki was selected by the discord server.
According to the South China Morning Post, 7,713 votes were cast before Karki’s 50%hit. She met Nepal President, Ram Chandra Podal and Army Chief, General Ashok Raj Sigdel the next day.
A channel model Modevot Lamichne told The New York Times that the voting was only to suggest to an interim leader who could oversee elections.
Why did General Z protesters use discord?
On the surface, many people are not familiar with discord, especially millennial. However, for General Z, this is a convenient and comfortable platform. Unlike Instagram or X (East Twitter), there are no endless feeds of materials. There are many more features available compared to messaging platforms such as WhatsApp.
Discord server can allow users to deliberately and discuss incredibly large groups, something that becomes important during mass movements.
The protesters of Nepal knew how to use the app for their movement. Construction of server and various channels allows for a spontaneous flow of information. The server allegedly has declarations, fact-checks, ground updates, news dumps, queries, emergency helpline and separate channels for general discussions. This makes it very easy to collect specific information.
