Anuparna Roy of India makes history, wins the best director at the 82nd Venice Film Festival
The 82nd Venice Film Festival concluded with Indian filmmaker Anuparna Roy Making History, winning the best director for his debut ‘Songs of Fortegene Trees’, while American Indy’ Father Mother Sister Brother took Golden Lion for the best film.

The 82nd Venice Film Festival, one of the world’s most prestigious cinematic showcases, concluded with its award ceremony on Saturday, celebrating Best in Global Filmmaking. This year, Indian filmmaker Anupade Roy made history by winning his first feature, Best Director Award in the Orhizonti Section for his first feature, ‘Songs of Fortegene Trees’. She is the first Indian director to receive this honor to pay international attention to Indian cinema.
In a stunning turn on the festival, the American Indie film ‘Father Mother Sister Brother’ claimed the prestigious Golden Lion for the best film, which was well liked by ‘The Voice of Hind Rajab’. A powerful story discovery of the Gaza crisis, later, received an 22 -minute standing ovation from the audience, but exiting the top award.
The only Indian entry in the Origeti section this year includes ‘Songs of Forgotton Trees’, Naz Sheikh and Sumi Baghel and investigate the interconnected lives of two women in Mumbai. Produced by Bibbhanshu Rai, Romil Modi and Ranjan Singh, the film received widespread praise for his story tell and Roy’s assurance instructions.
Reacting to her victory, Anuparna Roy dedicated awards to women globally, saying, “The film is a tribute to every woman who has ever been silenced, ignored, or underestimated. This victory can inspire more voices, more stories and more power for women. The award, presented by filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, takes a step forward for gender representation in international cinema.
The festival celebrated veteran and emerging filmmakers, which highlighted various narratives and cinematic excellence. Roy’s victory indicates a shifting landscape in global cinema that embraces new voices and sets an example for Indian filmmakers who recognize international platforms.
