Indian-American doctor to be official delegate to Republican convention

Eminent Indian-American physician Dr Sampat Shivangi has been elected as an official delegate to the Republican National Convention to be held in Milwaukee this month, which will formally nominate former US President Donald Trump as the party’s presidential candidate.

78-year-old Trump is the Republican Party’s presumptive candidate for the presidential election.

An influential Indian-American community leader, Dr. Shivangi has been elected as a national delegate to the conference for the sixth time.

Dr. Shivangi said, “I am extremely happy and honored to share the news that I have been nominated and elected as an official delegate to the upcoming Republican National Convention to be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from July 13 to July 19, 2024.”

Trump will be formally nominated as the party’s candidate for the November 5 presidential election at the four-day Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The nomination process will be completed by Republican delegates from across the country.

Dr. Shivangi, a lifelong member of the Republican Party and a founding member of the Republican Indian Council and Republican Indian National Council, has been nominated as an RNC delegate six consecutive times.

“This will be the sixth time I will serve as a national delegate to the Republican National Convention to nominate the Republican Party’s candidate to run for national presidential election,” he said.

He said, “My nomination started when President George W. Bush was nominated in New York, then-Senator George McCain, Governor Mitt Romney and President Donald Trump were nominated in 2016 and 2020. Now it’s to elect President Donald Trump again in Milwaukee in 2024.”

He is the national chairman of the Indian American Political Education Forum, one of the oldest Indian American associations.

Over the last three decades, he has lobbied for numerous bills in the US Congress on behalf of India through his extensive contacts with US Senators and Congressmen.

“I think this is a unique honor and opportunity for an Indian American to represent the community at a national level,” he said.

Dr Shivangi said that he will be attending a luncheon hosted by Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves in honour of Mississippi delegates at Northern Lights in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 16.
