Kiran Rao, Biju toppo joins humans in the loop as executive manufacturers
Kiran Rao and Biju have joined the Toppo Loop as an executive producer for Indie film humans. The film throws light on invisible AI labor through the story of a tribal woman, questions about technology and indigenous knowledge.

Filmmakers Kiran Rao and Biju have come as an executive producer for the toppo ‘Humans in Loop’. This feature film follows the story of a tribal woman who is working as an AI data-labeler in Jharkhand. His support is just ahead of the dramatic release of the film on 5 September in Mumbai.
Directed by Arnya Sahe, the film focuses on Nehma, an Oraon tribal woman whose labeling data for the AI system becomes a window in today’s “smart” technologies. Shooted in Jharkhand, the film also explains how indigenous knowledge systems are being sidelined in the crowd towards rapid technological progress.
Kiran Rao, who directed India’s official entry ‘Missing Ladies’ at the 2024 Oscars, said she was ready for ‘humans in the loop’ to answer her emotional depth and its questions.
Rao said in a statement, “I loved watching ‘humans in loop’ first.” “It is deeply moving and thoughtful. Film gives an important global message about technology, labor and knowledge systems that we risk losing. Supporting the project made it both immediate and necessary.”
For Biju toppo, whose work has long focused on tribal stories, the film is particularly close to the house.
“The film speaks directly to the lives of those I have known and seen in person. For a very long, the tribal approach has been invisible not only in history, but also we have been invisible to imagine the future.”
‘Humans in the Loop’ recently won the FIPRESCI India Award, sharing the honor with ‘All V Imagine Az Light’, and is screening in film festivals and micro community programs across the country.
Now, the film is moving forward in a broad release, with the support of an impact distribution fund launched by the museum of imaginal futures. It opens on 5 September in Cinpolis Andheri, Mumbai, with further screening in Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram and Bangalore from 12 September.
Filmmaker is also initiating a “cinema of the People” initiative, allowing the audience to request screening in their cities, which tries to make the film more accessible and community-intensive.
Speaking about the film’s visit, director Arnya Saha mentioned the challenges to distribute independent cinema, but said Rao and Topo’s support had been encouraging.
