Kolhapuri Slipper Has intensive cultural significanceMakes a compulsory part of India’s legacy, and is named after Kolhapur district, where it is mainly produced.

In response to Prada’s move, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Bombay High Court, demanding compensation for Kolhapuri Chapel artisans whose work has been copied without acknowledgment.

A petition was filed by a group of advocates from Mumbai And Pune which work in the field of intellectual property rights. Under the leadership of Advocate Ganesh S. Hingmire, the argument, Prada Group and a direction for the Prada India Fashion Private Limited, also accepts the unauthorized use of the “Kolhapuri Chapel” GI product to release a public apology, and is committed that there will be no informal use of GIS in the future.

This further demands that the rights of the Indian artisan community be clearly recognized. The argument also demands compensation for the artisan community for iconic and economic losses.

PILs filed in the High Court demand guidelines and proper relief, including prohibition and damage/compensation for unauthorized commercialization of a GI-tagged product. The petition claims that this commercialization has traditionally caused significant damage to the product -associated community, especially in the state of Maharashtra.
