Amazon CEO Andy Jassi allegedly stated that AI is going to change how companies work, and as a result some jobs will require fewer people who can perform instead of AI. In a recent interview with CNBC’s Jim Craermer, Jassi admitted that as technology gets better, especially with a rapid growth of generative AI, some roles in companies would be handled more efficiently by machines.
“With every technical change, there will be some working people who actually start to automate the technology,” he said.
Although it could sound related to workers, Jassi was early to add that AI would also bring new opportunities. According to him, even some tasks become automated, more people will be employed in areas such as AI development, robotics and other areas that require human skills and innovation. “But other jobs are going to be,” he said, suggesting that change will not be about the job cuts but to focus.
This visual is part of a major trend in the technical world. In the last one year, many companies have talked about how AI is already taking regular work. Salesforce CEO Mark Benioff recently revealed that AI is now working 30 to 50 percent in his company. Similarly, other technical giant employees such as Shopify and Microsoft are encouraged to make AI part of their daily work. For example, online lender Clarna has succeeded in reducing the size of his team by about 40 percent, partially thanks to AI and also due to regular employees exit.
In Amazon, Jassi has already warned internally that its task will probably shrink in the coming years as the company continues to adopt AI extensively. In a memorandum sent to employees earlier this month, he explained that it is difficult to predict accurate results, the company’s corporate team is expected to be smaller over time as it finds ways to work more efficiently with the AI tool.
The message is clear: AI is going to play a big role of how Amazon operates, and some traditional roles may no longer need. But Jassi believes that this will give employees a chance to work on more meaningful and creative works. In the interview, he said that AI will help free people from “Rot Work” and allow them to focus on inventing better products and services at a fast pace.
Amazon has already been cutting jobs in the last few years, even before these latest AI changes. From the beginning of 2022, the company has closed over 27,000 employees in various departments. Small rounds of targeted trimming have also recently occurred in retail and device teams.
