In short

  • Amazon says AI will reduce corporate jobs in future
  • CEOs of the company urge employees to customize and learn AI skills
  • It is currently unknown which roles will affect

Amazon has allegedly indicated that the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will reduce the company in the next few years. CEO Andy Jassi shared this update in a memo, where he said that as AI tools and agents being introduced, the company would need fewer people for some current roles.

According to Jassi, the way of working in AI Amazon is changing. While it will open new types of jobs, it will also change many existing people. He said that it is difficult to guess how things will change, but the company expects a decrease in its corporate workforce as AI becomes a large part of operation.

Jasson said in a memo posted on the Amazon website, “As we roll more generous AIs and agents, we should change our work method. We will need to do some people doing some work today, and more people are doing other types of jobs.”

Currently, Amazon employs about 1.5 million people. However, the company has not stated which departments will be affected due to AI adoption or how many employees can lose their jobs. This announcement occurs at a time when Amazon is already cutting back to work in its retail business. Earlier this year, reports stated that the company had recruited for several roles. Meanwhile, Amazon is also investing heavily in AI, which is mainly planned to spend close to $ 100 billion on data centers and AI development.

The situation has created concern among the employees, especially in corporate teams. Many people are uncertain about what it means for their future in the company. While Jassi encouraged the workers to learn about AI and Upskil, the overall tone of the message indicated on further significant changes. He described AI as one of the biggest technical changes since the Internet and said that those who are hurried to adapt would have better opportunities to grow within the company.

Amazon is not the only company to take this route. In recent months, many CEOs have spoke openly how AI can cut jobs. For example, the CEO of telecom company BT has also warned that AI can cause more pruning. The CEO of AI firm Anthropic also suggested that half the jobs of all entry level office could disappear.

For now, Amazon has not released any detailed plan regarding the expected job cuts. When asked for further comments, the company did not choose to share more than what was said in the memo.
