Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap shared a strong response to the recent comments on ‘Sacred Games’ by CEO Ted Sarandos, Netflix. The latter recently appeared on Nikhil Kamath’s WTF podcast, where he spoke about the development and early material options of Netflix India – including Sacred Games, Heramandi, CID and Kapil Sharma Show.

During a conversation with Kamath, Ted Sarandos expressed some doubts about Netflix’s Indian original programming with ‘Holy Sports’. He commented that, in Hindight, the stage could have been opted for some more populist to kick his India’s slate.

The comment did not sit well with filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who co-produced the ‘holy game’, and he strongly responded on social media. Sharing a screenshot of a news article on the CEO’s comment, Kashyap said he should “start with the mother -in -law.”

Additionally, he called Sarandos “dumb” and said, “I always knew that technical people are dumb when it comes to storytelling, but @Tedsarandos is the definition of dumb that I did not know. It is good to find out. It now explains everything (SIC).”

‘Sacred Games’, co-directed by Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwen, was the first original series of Netflix India. Starring Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the show premiered for widespread praise in 2018. Conversely, its second season received average review, and the series was eventually closed.

Talking to Nikhil Kamath, Ted Sarandos admitted that it took several years to understand the nuances of the Indian market.

While he praised the ‘Holy Sports’ as a “novel”, which felt a film with the film stars, he admitted that he would have chosen it later to launch it and lead with the content that was more mass friendly. He also said that India remains a slow market to develop, but a promising and growing growth for Netflix.
