Zomato shuts down intercity food delivery service ‘Zomato Legends’

After two years of trying, Zomato is shutting down its intercity food delivery service – ‘Zomato Legends’, CEO Deepinder Goyal announced. The idea behind ‘Zomato Legends’ revolves around the ability to order food from not just a nearby or a faraway restaurant in your city, from the comfort of your home, but also famous dishes from other cities in the country. With ‘Intercity Legends’, one can order dishes like “baked rosogulla from Kolkata, biryani from Hyderabad, Mysore Pak from Bengaluru, kebabs from Lucknow, butter chicken from Old Delhi or pyaaz kachori from Jaipur”.

Announcing the end of the service on his x (formerly Twitter) handle, Zomato CEO wrote, “Update on Zomato Legends – After two years of trying the product, having not found market fit, we have decided to discontinue the service with immediate effect.”

Many commented that they had never heard of ‘Zomato Legends’. One wrote, “Heard about Zomato Legends for the first time today”, while another said, “I never knew this existed.”

Many called it a “marketing failure”. One wrote, “I think it is not marketed well. Not many people know about Zomato Legends.” Another commented, “I always wanted to use it and thought I would order it someday.”

Sharing his experience, a user said, “I loved ordering from this, until I got ice cold kebabs “from Lucknow” in Delhi.”
According to Zomato’s blog, for the intercity service, the food was “freshly prepared by the restaurant and packed in reusable and tamper-proof containers to keep it safe during air transport. State-of-the-art mobile refrigeration technology preserved the food without freezing it or adding any kind of preservatives.” Once you’ve got your order, you can “microwave, air-fry, or pan-fry the food just like any other dish from the refrigerator.” This service is no longer available.
