1. Sriram Raghavan – Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas arrived in theaters earlier this year. Sriram Raghavan, who is known for suspense elements in his films, brings his unique style to this mystery thriller as well. This was his first collaboration with actors Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi. The film, about two strangers who meet on Christmas Eve, was highly appreciated.
2. Kiran Rao – Missing Ladies
The comedy drama Lapata Ladies definitely won the hearts of the audience in 2024. This film was Kiran Rao’s second directorial venture after Dhobhi Ghat. Starring Nitanshi Goyal, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Srivastava, Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan, it revolves around two young brides and their journey of self-discovery. Lapata Ladies also became India’s official entry at the Oscars 2025.
3. Vikas Bahl – Devil
Vikas Bahl’s Shaitan was another impressive film of this year. The supernatural horror thriller starring Ajay Devgan, R Madhavan and Jyothika was praised by critics and audiences alike. The film is the story of a family that becomes troubled when their daughter is affected by black magic.
4. Imtiaz Ali – Amar Singh Chamkila
Imtiaz Ali made a comeback with his film Amar Singh Chamkila. This biographical drama is based on the life of musician Amar Singh Chamkila, played by Diljit Dosanjh. Parineeti Chopra played the role of his singer-wife Amarjot Kaur. The Netflix film received widespread praise for its direction, acting and music.
5.Aditya Sarpotdar – Munjya
The horror comedy genre ruled the year 2024 and Munjya was among the successful ventures. Maddock, directed by Aditya Sarpotdar and inspired by Indian folklore, is part of the supernatural universe. The film stars Sharvari and Abhay Verma in lead roles along with Mona Singh and Satyaraj. It entertained audiences in theaters and was a box office success.
6. Amar Kaushik – Female 2
Stree 2: Sarkate Ka Terror is the sequel to the 2018 film Stree. Audiences reached theaters in large numbers to watch Amar Kaushik’s film and it provided them with a lot of entertainment. This film was a huge hit at the box office. Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Abhishek Banerjee, Aparshakti Khurana and Pankaj Tripathi reprized their roles. This time, the gang had to save Chanderi town from a new villain, Sarkata.
7. Hansal Mehta – The Buckingham Murders
Hansal Mehta directed the highly acclaimed film The Buckingham Murders, which was released in theaters in 2024. The crime thriller stars Kareena Kapoor Khan in the lead role of detective Jas Bhamra. She investigates the case of a missing child. Ranveer Brar, Ash Tandon, Asad Raja, Prabhleen Sandhu, Sanjeev Mehra, Adwoa Akoto and Zain Hussain are also part of the cast.
