Xiaomi Mix Flip review

Xiaomi has had several generations of foldable phones, but the Mix Flip is its first clamshell foldable. And it might be the most impressive of its kind, at least among the phones that will be available in Europe (it will cost around €1,300).

First of all, the retail package includes not just a USB cable but also a 67W fast charger. Yes, the Xiaomi Mix Flip’s battery goes up to 67W, which is more than Samsung’s Galaxy Z phones (both the Fold and Flip come at just 25W) and it also beats the Moto Razr 50 Ultra (45W). The one drawback here is that wireless charging is not supported.

The other thing that isn’t visible but you will definitely feel it – Xiaomi has fitted a huge 4,780mAh battery in this phone. And the huge battery is no exaggeration, the Galaxy Z Flip6 and Razr 50 Ultra have 4,000mAh batteries and even the much bigger Galaxy Z Fold only has a 4,400mAh battery.

We’ve already tested the Mix Flip’s battery life and while it’s not the best (as the Moto beats it by a few minutes), it’s still pretty good for a flip foldable. We’ve yet to complete a charging test, but a run to 100% at 67W should be over pretty quickly.

We still haven’t opened the Mix Flip and we have one more feature to highlight – the 4″ cover display. Xiaomi has given it a square-like aspect ratio, but cleverly created a 16:9 area for running apps, which eliminates any compatibility issues. The display is big enough that you can navigate using Google Maps, read and reply to messages, and use basically any app. Note that the keyboard uses the full width of the display (unlike apps), so it’s just as comfortable to use as the keyboard on the main display.

OK, it’s time to open the phone – wait, give us a moment, it’s not as easy as it looks. All jokes aside, the flat edges of the phone mean you really have to dig your thumb into it to separate the two halves. Then, the stiff hinge will give you a whole lot of struggle when you push it to open it 180°.

But the effort is worthwhile as it features a massive 6.86″ LTPO OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The pixel density is higher than both the Z Flip6 and the Razr 50 Ultra and you get features like Dolby Vision and up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness.

Let’s turn the phone off again to look at the cameras. Xiaomi opted for a 50MP sensor (1.0µm pixels, OIS) in the main camera and a 50MP portrait camera with a 47mm (2x) lens – Motorola made the same choice. Is losing the ultra-wide a big deal? Would it have been better if the tele camera had a longer lens? Let’s leave these questions for the review.

The Xiaomi Mix Flip review is well underway and we’ll be back with all the details soon.
