Last month, Apple CEO Tim Cook made headlines by talking about generative AI during an earnings call and how the company has an advantage in this area. The tech giant’s CEO had said that they are “looking forward to sharing some very exciting things with our customers soon.” Keeping up with the promise, Apple made generative AI announcements for users during the WWDC 2024 opening keynote last night. The Cupertino-based tech giant unveiled Apple Intelligence during the event, which integrated generative AI features into macOS 15 Sequoia, iOS 18, and iPadOS 18. However, not all devices capable of running these operating systems will support Apple Intelligence features.

Who will get Apple Intelligence features?

Apple announced during the event that Apple Intelligence is compatible with devices using the Apple M1, M2, M3, and M4 chips, as well as the A17 Pro chipset, meaning some existing devices may not receive these features later this year.

To elaborate a little, the current iPad Pro and iPad Air models as well as previous iPads using the M1 and M2 chips will get support, while the base model iPad 10.9 and iPad mini will not get the Apple Intelligence features as they use older Apple Bionic chips.

In addition, the only iPhone models compatible with Apple Intelligence will be the A17 Pro-powered iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Since the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus use the A16 Bionic chipset, they will not support Apple Intelligence.

Talking about Mac, devices like MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Studio, or Mac Mini with M1 chip or newer will be supported, while devices with Intel processors may not be supported.

Now coming to the question that might be coming to your mind whether your device is compatible with Apple Intelligence – when will these features be available?

By the way, Apple Intelligence is already available exclusively to developers. So, if you are an Apple developer, you can access some Apple Intelligence features through the latest macOS 15 Sequoia, iPadOS 18, and iOS 18 developer betas.

For those enrolled in Apple’s public beta program, Apple Intelligence will also be available in the public beta versions of these platforms. However, not all features may be included, and functionality may be limited.

The official release of Apple Intelligence to the general public is scheduled for the latter part of the year. Apple typically releases iOS updates shortly before the launch of new iPhone models, so if the iPhone 16 is announced in September, iOS 18 is expected to be available about a week earlier. iPadOS 18 is also expected to launch around the same time.

Regarding macOS Sequoia, it is likely that the final version will be available around September this year, similar to iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.

Apple Intelligence Features

Some of the features of Apple Intelligence include writing tools that allow users to adjust the tone of an email to make it more friendly, professional, or concise. Users can also proofread and rewrite content directly within the Mail app.

Another great feature of Apple Intelligence is Genmoji, which lets users create custom emojis using simple text prompts, such as “T-Rex on a surfboard” or “smiley resting with cucumber slices.” Additionally, users can turn a regular photo from their library into a Genmoji.

Apple Intelligence also includes an image generator called Image Playground. This tool accepts text input and allows users to choose from three styles: animation, illustration, and sketch. These images can be shared across messaging apps and social media platforms, creating personalized images in any of the three styles. On iPads, users can turn a simple sketch into an image by circling it with the Apple Pencil and adding more context.

Supercharged by Apple intelligence, Siri now supports natural language and can understand even imperfectly spoken words, extracting personal context from device-stored information, including email. For the first time, users can type to Siri, and AI is used to prioritize important information. Additionally, users can access OpenAI’s GPT-4 through Siri for more detailed context and specific questions.

Apple has also paid special attention to protecting the privacy of users, ensuring that their data remains secure. The company also said that any information collected by Siri will not be shared with Apple.
