In short

  • Now you can set a custom ringtone on iPhone with iOS 26
  • The audio you want to use should already be in the file app or in voice memo
  • You can still download any audio from the Internet in iOS

iOS or Android – Which is better? This is not the easiest question to answer. At the end of the day, it actually comes down that works best for you. And this is completely fine. But let’s be honest – no matter which team you are on, neither the operating system is perfect. For example, take Android. It is great – open, flexible, full of adaptation. But it still does not match the iOS when this ecosystem talks about integration, continuous UI, or aircrafts such as facilities such as integration. On the other hand, IOS, for all its polish and reliability, is now catching only a few basic characteristics and Android users have enjoyed over the years, such as T9 dialer or native call recording.

And now, in another long update, Apple is finally allowing iOS users to set custom ringtone in iOS 26. Yes, the same feature is the Android phone forever. But as long as it is, this new feature comes as a welcome relief.

Finally, an easy way to set a custom ringtone on the iPhone

By now, if you wanted a custom ringtone on your iPhone, you had only two options – pay for one on the iTunes store, or undergo a painful complex process using garageband. Both were upset in their own way.

But with iOS 26 (developer preview only for now), Apple has made it easy. You can still download any audio from the Internet, but it is very simple to set at least one custom tone. Here’s how you do it:

– First, make sure that the audio file you want to use is already on your iPhone – either in files or in voice memo.
-If is in files files, press it for a long time and tap share.
-If it is in voice memo, tap on the three-dot icon next to the file, then tap the share.
– In the share menu, swipe a little, and use it as a ringtone.
– That’s it. You have set your custom ringtone. It will now also appear in the ringtone section under sounds and haptics. And once your custom tone is left, it becomes super easy to switch between them.

While setting a tone, it has now become easier, getting your hands on the right audio file is still a bit of a headache. For example, I wanted to relieve some nostalgia and set a classic ringtone, which was one of my favorite on my Nokia N8. It was found online in seconds, but could not download it directly on my iPhone. Why? Because iOS does not let you download Mp3s or MP4S from the browser. Not even ringtones.

So, what I had to do here:

– I downloaded the ringtone on my Mac.
– Then I used Airdrop to send my iPhone.
– It immediately appeared in the file app, ready to use.

Alternatively, you can ask someone to email the file or send it to WhatsApp. IOS will let you download it from there.

So yes, now you can finally set the custom ringtone in iOS 26. Now, if only Apple allows us to download audio files directly to our iPhones – this is next to my wish list.
