Nowadays, when we think of smartwatches, we get dozens of options from different brands, with Apple, Google, and Garmin leading the premium segment. These smartwatches offer advanced health and fitness tracking to help users keep track of their daily activities. However, in a world of evolving AI, is being smart enough? Not anymore, it seems. Or so Google believes. The company has decided to make its next-generation Pixel Watch 3 even smarter by using its own Gemini AI. Using Gemini AI, the new Pixel Watch 3 uses machine learning to detect health events and provide users with guidance tailored to their physical abilities.

For example, unlike other smartwatches that simply scan your health and give you the data, the Google Pixel Watch 3 will use features like Daily Readiness and Cardio Load metrics. The AI will also create daily workout recommendations so users can get the most out of their training and avoid overexertion. And to do this the Watch 3 will tailor its recommendations to the user’s physical limitations and abilities.

To collect the right amount of health data in real-time, Google has also added a new AI-backed motion sensing capability to the Pixel Watch 3. Its main use will be for users who will use the watch to track their running sessions. While running, the Watch 3 will capture data points such as cadence, stride length, and ground contact time. These insights on running form will help runners refine their technique based on the results and improve their performance, the company noted.

While workout and health tracking is useful, Google is also adding some features that can help Watch 3 users recover and recuperate after intense workouts. This will be best seen in a feature called Bedtime Mode. The AI will track the user’s sleep and adjust settings that will help them get a deeper sleep. And once a user wakes up, the AI with the Morning Brief feature will help them get information on how to plan their day based on their body’s response.

Of course, there are a few more features beyond health tracking that could be crucial or even lifesaving for some people. The Watch 3 is coming with Loss of Pulse Detection this year, an AI-powered feature that is able to detect serious health events, such as when the heart suddenly stops beating or when the pulse suddenly weakens and a person falls unconscious due to a medical emergency. Like Apple’s heart rate monitoring and fall detection, Google’s Loss of Pulse Detection will continue to monitor the user’s pulse and if it detects something wrong, it will automatically alert emergency services, providing important information such as the user’s location.
