Vettaiyaan starring Rajinikanth, Amitabh Bachchan and Fahadh Faasil is running successfully in theatres. According to Sacknilk, the film directed by TJ Gnanavel has crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in India. While fans waited for the sequel, the filmmaker came forward and shared his plans for the prequel.
During a media interaction, TJ Gnanvel talked about his future projects and said, “I am more interested in exploring the prequel. Vettaiyaan: The Hunter may elaborate on Athiyan’s journey, revealing How he became an encounter specialist, Fahadh Faasil’s transformation into a thief and police informer, and other aspects of the background of the story.”
The acclaimed filmmaker revealed that he has always been troubled by the idea of encounter killings, often questioning the truth behind them.
He noted that the climax scene of Vettaiyaan highlights this point: “Where we see the alleged encounter of red sandalwood smugglers turns out to be a tragic case of tree-cutters.”
TJ Gnanvel mentioned a bitter truth and said that his research showed how only the poor became victims of such encounters while the rich managed to escape. However, he expressed that he believes in India’s judicial system and its strength despite its many flaws.
The filmmaker also spoke about his experience working with Rajinikanth and how the actor’s daughter approached him for a good script.
Director TJ Gnanvel expressed his surprise when the actor gave him complete creative freedom. He said that although Jai Bhim was successful, its appeal was more niche. However, with Rajinikanth on board, he needed to create a broader vision to ensure that the global audience could connect with the film.
Talking about Vettaiyaan, the film is nearing the Rs 150 crore mark in India. Apart from the lead actors, the film also stars Dushara Vijayan, Manju Warrier and Rana Daggubati in lead roles.
