Will Sohum Shah’s Tumbbad re-release be a box office success? Experts opine
Sohum Shah starrer Tumbbad has re-released in theatres today, September 13. Though it did not create any buzz when it first released in 2018, it has now garnered a lot of buzz. Trade analysts Taran Adarsh and Girish Johar share if the film will be able to surpass its original lifetime collections.

Six years ago, during the festive season in October, a horror thriller hit theatres near us. The film, called ‘Tumbbad’, had neither any famous stars nor was the marketing of the film strong. So, the film came and went, but it did not attract much attention. However, the handful of people who watched it loved the horror tadka in the film.
Very soon the film was released on OTT and people started watching it. Mind you, this was still 2018 and OTT was not as big as it is today. Slowly it caught people’s attention to such an extent that it became a cult classic. It is a masterclass in how to weave A perfect blend of horror and folklore. The film was also a masterpiece in terms of visual quality, and the acting was top-notch too. Good content always finds a way to reach the audience, as did Tumbbad, which many now refer to as a classic.
After six years, on Friday the 13th, Tumbbad is being released on the big screen again. And those who have seen it can guarantee that the scenes shown in the film will come alive in theatres. After all, it is a great film made for theatres. The excitement is also evident and this time, the team of the film has promoted it. The lead actor Sohum Shah is now a popular actor, having given great performances in shows like ‘Maharani’ and ‘Roar’. So, will the film be able to attract the audience? Rewrite your success story, just like Laila Majnu did Last month?

Producer and film business expert Girish Johar said, “It did good business the last time it was released. I think the re-release will bring back even more nostalgic memories.” He added, “All re-releases have been very popular. However, the success of re-releases also depends on the new releases of the week. This week Buckingham Murders has created a lot of buzz. So, people will want to watch new releases because of the ticket prices as audiences are always eager to watch something new.”
Tumbbad has already registered a very high advance booking collection on re-release, taking the film very close to crossing its lifetime collections. “The film has received a lot of love and it is reflecting in the advance booking numbers,” said noted trade analyst Taran Adarsh. “The advance collections have been very good and people know that the film has released. Over time, it has also built a fan base. Now, today, when the film has released, I am sure it will do even better. Forget Laila Majnu, it will surpass that.”
He said that the advance booking numbers are more than half of what it earned during its original release. Taran Adarsh elaborated while talking to us, “This is a very good sign for a film that is releasing repeatedly and on select screens in select cities. It doesn’t have that much reach.”
But he also said that ultimately, the success of a film depends on the audience and their response over the weekend is important. However, Girish Johar said that the film will benefit the most from this. He said, “People who are not aware of the film will also get to know about it and even if they are not able to watch it in theaters, they will definitely watch it on OTT.”
Taran Adarsh feels that the film will attract audiences. “With the lack of theatre releases, it is a good time to re-release films, but not every film can do well at the box office. It should have some specialty and only then can we expect audiences to come,” said the trade expert.
