As he begins on a two -day visit to Mauritius, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday that the yatra would open a “new and bright” chapter in relations between the two nations.
PM Modi is visiting Mauritius mainly to complose the National Day celebrations of the island nation at the invitation of Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgulam on 11 and 12 March.
In his statement of his departure, the Prime Minister said that “he was eager to” join Mauritius’ leadership to enhance our partnership in all his aspects and strengthen our permanent friendship for our progress and prosperity.
A contingent of Indian Armed Forces will participate in the ceremonies with the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force’s Akash Ganga Skidoving Team.
PM Modi said, “Mauritius is a close sea neighbor, a prominent partner in the Indian Ocean, and the entrance to the African continent. We are associated with history, geography and culture.”
“Deep Mutual Trust, a common belief in the values of democracy, and our diversity is our strength,” he said.
The Prime Minister said that people’s relations with close and historical people between the two sides are a source of common pride.
“I am confident that this journey will be built on the foundation of the past and will open a new and bright chapter in India and Mauritius relations,” he said.
The Prime Minister said that in the last 10 years, “significant progress” has been made between the two sides, which are with the focused initiative of the people.
He said, “I look forward to the opportunity to connect with Mauritius leadership to increase our partnership in all our aspects and strengthen our permanent friendship for our progress and prosperity, as well as for safety and development in the Indian Ocean region, as part of our Vision Sea,” he said.
The ocean stands for safety and development for all in the region.
Mauritius’ National Day celebrations will be held on 12 March.
India and Mauritius have uniquely close cooperation in maritime security, development, capacity-making, in addition to people with people. Close bonds are evident in particularly India-helping development projects that dott the Mauritius landscape.
India is one of the largest trading partners in Mauritius.
Mauritius was the second largest source of FDI in India for 2023-24 after Singapore.
Mauritius and India signed a comprehensive economic cooperation and partnership agreement (CECPA) in February 2021 after nearly 15 years of talks. This was the first trade agreement signed by India with an African country.
