The risk of Tesla CEO Elon Musk is being expelled from the UK’s oldest scientific academy – Royal Society. The move comes after more than 2,700 scientists signed an open letter to oppose the membership of the world’s richest man at the respected institute. A meeting in this regard will be held on March 3.
In an open letter, Professor Stephen Curry, who is from Imperial College London, has criticized the society for his “continuous silence and clear inactivity” about Musk’s 2018 fellowship.
Professor Curry also questioned the society not to take action against Musk, despite knowing that his “behavior was in violation of the code of conduct of the society.”
He also highlighted the resignation of Professor Dorothy Bishop, which promoted Elon Musk’s “baseless conspiracy principles and promoted his malicious allegations against Anthony Faussi, former Chief Medical Advisor to the United States President.”
Professor Curry said that he is in a disadvantage to understand how these tasks are in line with the code of conduct, in which scholars require “proper relations for the statement of values developed by society from time to time”.
According to Professor Curry, the situation is serious due to Mr. Musk’s involvement in the US administration. The 53 -year -old has been appointed as an advisor to President Donald Trump and is head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Several members, including Professor Dorothy Bishop of Oxford’s Psychological University, have already resigned in protest. Professor Bishop had said that he had refused to be associated with an institution that calls Elon Musk a member.
In over 150 years, no member has been expelled from the Royal Society except Rudolf Eric Rasp, which was removed due to fraud.
