Wicked star Bowen Yang opens up about SNL’s trashy parties. The actor revealed that the unique ceremonies are held in halls that are decorated with garbage.
In his conversation with People Magazine, the comedian revealed that it was the implementation of Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryan’s ideas.
Previously, comedy show cast members leaned toward the traditions of Secret Santa and white elephant gift exchanges. However, due to people’s feelings getting hurt and the original gifts being exchanged, the team members changed plans, and for the past few years, the SNL cast and crew have been having trash parties.
Further explaining the tradition, Yang told the entertainment portal, “Because people were like, ‘Oh, I got a bad ending and this person got a good one.’ And so, Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon hit it off in their early days.
He continued, “And then they throw what’s called a trash party, which (when) everybody — after the read-through of the Christmas show, the last read-through of the year — just contributes something to the trash party. So it’s more like a potluck rather than a gift thing.”
The actor further talked about the potluck system, claiming that each of them brings a food item of their choice, either burgers or jello shots, but whatever it is, everyone comes together to make random contributions.
The Monkey King star further added that holiday parties are a way for the cast to cheer up and just have fun.

He revealed, “It’s a moment for us to go beyond the afterparty, which is hard to achieve. It’s hard for us all to be in the same place at the same time, because not everyone goes to the afterparty, and people I’m tired, and that’s a big question.”
The parties are held in NBC’s writers’ room at 30 Rockefeller Center. The actor further explained that they stay on the first floor, switch off the lights and switch on the party lights. The actor shared, “It would be like someone’s contribution would be a karaoke machine, and it’s a mess, and it’s so much fun.”
On the work front, Bowen Yang was last seen in the film Wicked alongside Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. The film is running successfully in theatres.
