Ted Lasso, a fan-favorite show starring Jason Sudeikis, became an overnight success after it premiered on Apple TV+ in August 2020. The feel-good comedy touched the hearts of millions, and after its third season concluded in May 2023, anticipation for more ran supreme among fans.
The show was written to have a three-arc season, and even though no sequel was planned for it, the growing excitement among the makers and the audience has already opened the doors for discussions on it. Though the show was supposed to end after the third season, there are indications that the show is not going to end just yet.
The future of Ted Lasso: Is there more to come?
In an interview with Collider in August 2024, Ted Lasso co-creator, writer, and producer Bill Lawrence said: “Everyone – the cast and crew – wants to do more of this show. But everyone knows it’s up to one guy: Jason Sudeikis.” Lawrence summed up the collective sentiment, saying: “As fans, we’d all die if it started again, but everyone would say the same thing, which is this: Whatever Jason wants to do and whatever his decision is, we’re all on board with it.”
The sports comedy-drama, which he presented with brilliant acting and as the head writer, follows the titular Ted Lasso. The fates of a US college football coach become intertwined as he manages the struggling English Premier League soccer team AFC Richmond in London. The character sees life from another perspective and this is what makes him popular among fans. Also, the way he coaches is also loved by fans and for all these reasons, the series became extremely famous around the world.
Lawrence knew that Sudeikis would have to go through some major personal sacrifices to revive Ted Lasso, although he would be there to carry the character forward. With two children from his former relationship with Olivia Wilde, Sudeikis would have to change his personal life and relocate to a foreign country for himself. Lawrence said: “Not only is he the star, but he’s also the head writer, and he’s also the person whose life has to completely change and move to a foreign country with young kids. It’s a big deal.”
Declan Lowney told The Hollywood Reporter that the “human cost” of the situation was indeed very high. “Every time we do a season, it’s a year in England, away from our families. It’s been a very hard struggle over (the last) three and a half years, four years,” he said.
“But despite this, there’s still a chance for Ted Lasso in some format. It’s already been hinted that there could be room for a spinoff – and the door hasn’t been completely closed on the idea.
What has Jason Sudeikis said so far?
Speaking ahead of the release of the third season, Sudeikis explained how Ted Lasso was originally pitched as a three-season story. He told Deadline in March 2023: “This is the end of the story we wanted to tell, that we wanted to tell, that we loved to tell.”
However, the overwhelming fan response in its favor has taken things even further. Sudeikis acknowledged that fans would want even more, saying, “The fact that people would want more and are more curious than ever about what they don’t know yet — that Season 3 is — it’s flattering.” Sudeikis also hinted at the possibility of a spinoff: “Yeah, I think we’ve set the table for all kinds of people to look forward to these stories.”
Speaking to PEOPLE in January 2024, Sudeikis reiterated his sentiments and talked about the optimism seen throughout its three seasons. He said, “I think the three seasons of the show were just created to embody and enforce that feeling of hope, and so I hold those three seasons up as an example.”
Although there is no official statement on the fourth season of Ted Lasso, the makers and fans are looking forward to it, making everyone eager for more episodes.
