Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have become one of the most talked about couples in Hollywood recently after they filed for divorce. While they are making headlines for their relationship, it’s important to remember why they broke up in the first place back in 2004. Lopez talked about their breakup in an interview for Apple Music’s This Is Me Now radio series.
The couple’s first relationship began in the early 2000s, which attracted media attention. They became known as Bennifer, and their public romance attracted a lot of media attention. They called off their wedding in 2003, which was supposed to happen but just a few days before, garnering a lot of attention from the public.
At the time, they released a statement saying that excessive media attention was the reason for the breakup. However, an interview with Lopez reveals that their breakup was much more complicated than outside pressures.
Reflecting on their relationship, Lopez said, “We didn’t break up right away, it happened over the next few months.” She explained that the media pressure caused doubts about their relationship. “It caused doubts in both of us and me about what our relationship was and where it was going, I think.”
Lopez questioned whether they were really meant to be together, even though she had deep feelings for Affleck. “I knew in my heart that I wanted to be with him for the rest of my life, I knew that. But it didn’t feel like we were going to work it out. And so, that scared me,” she admitted.
Lopez also admitted that her emotional maturity at the time had a significant impact on their separation. She said that neither she nor Affleck were willing to put in the effort needed to keep their relationship going. She said they weren’t ready to deal with it and looked at each other and said, “What we have is real, we need to try harder, we need to do some work,” she said.
Their inability to deal with the challenges of a serious relationship forced them to separate. “We just weren’t in that situation,” Lopez said. She added: “And so, we thought, ‘Oh, that’s what people do, they break up when things get tough, and we went our separate ways.'”
Despite their love for each other, Lopez and Affleck struggled to maintain their relationship amid growing doubts and external pressures. Lopez spoke about the difficulty of letting go, saying that it was a very sad moment to let go of someone you really love because you don’t understand it. You don’t have the emotional capacity or ability to understand it at that time.
Following their breakup, Lopez and Affleck moved on with their lives and found new partners. Affleck married actress Jennifer Garner and had three children: Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel.
Lopez is married to singer Marc Anthony and they have twins, Emme and Max. Both stars have had other relationships as well, with Lopez most notably being engaged to former baseball player Alex Rodriguez before they split in 2021.
After years of personal growth and life experiences, Lopez and Affleck crossed paths again. But they are back in the news for their separation as Jennifer has filed for divorce and a separation date has been set.
