Freaky Friday has finally been renewed for a sequel, Freakier Friday. Original cast members Lindsay Lohan and Jaime Lee Curtis will return as the iconic daughter-mother duo. The film will be released in theaters in August 2025, 22 years after the original blockbuster premiered. Speaking to TODAY on Thursday, December 12, Curtis revealed why there had to be such a long gap between films.
He said, “We couldn’t make the film yet because Lindsay (Lohan) was too old to be 15.” In the sequel, Lohan’s character, Anna Coleman, will play the mother of her daughter and soon-to-be stepdaughter. “She has a 15-year-old daughter, so I’m a grandmother now,” Curtis quipped.
The Oscar winner then teased the highly-anticipated sequel, claiming it will give audiences, especially Freaky Friday fans, a “nostalgic feeling.” “It has memories of the original film with the pink slip and Chad Michael Murray. And it checks every box you want,” she added. According to the actress, apart from similar themes, the film will also have “new elements”.
As Variety reports, Freakier Friday features a group of new and young actors including Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and Manny Jacinto. The Good Place actor will play the Mean Girls actress’ husband in the sequel.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lohan shared her experience working with Jacinto for the first time. Manny is sweet and so much fun,” she told the outlet at the time. The actress, along with Curtis, spoke to The New York Times about their memories of each other on the set of the 2003 film.
Curtis revealed that his “strongest memory” with Lohan was filming the memorable scene where they were eating French fries in the car. “Now that you’ve told everyone, we can’t do this anymore. I remember we wanted fresh French fries and she kept getting all the good French fries,” Lohan said.
The story of Freaky Friday revolves around Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan), a mother-daughter duo who were not together until a “strange” incident changed their bodies, Due to which they were forced to live life in place of each other. History will repeat itself in the sequel!
