Why can a One Piece fan letter be called filler? Explained

The recent One Piece anime special, One Piece Fan Letter, has sparked discussion among fans as to whether it belongs to the canon story or falls into the “filler” category. Released to celebrate the anime’s 25th anniversary, this special episode explores unseen perspectives of the Straw Hat crew’s journey, set exclusively after the Marineford Arc. However, despite its deep dive into the characters’ backstories and One Piece lore, there are arguments supporting its classification as filler rather than core canon.

Defining “Filler” in Anime

In anime, “filler” usually refers to content added outside of the original manga to prevent the anime from reaching ongoing chapters. This additional material allows the manga’s story to progress without the pressure of the anime’s fast-paced adaptation schedule. Filler arcs generally contain non-canonical material that does not directly affect the main story. Fans consider episodes such as the Ice Hunter Arc and the G-8 Arc in One Piece to be excellent examples of fillers, created to stall the main plot and give the manga time to move forward.

Purpose and production of One Piece fan letter

One Piece Fan Letter differs from standard filler arcs in some ways, but some aspects keep it outside the main story. Produced during the regular anime’s hiatus, this special was released as part of the anniversary celebration rather than an integral chapter of One Piece. Although this spin-off novel is based on material from the One Piece novel: Straw Hat Stories, this material is not written or directly controlled by series creator Eiichiro Oda, raising questions about its authenticity. Like other anime fillers, it does not advance the main plot but instead provides additional context to well-known events.

Adaptation of non-manga material

Although One Piece Fan Letter is based on material from Straw Hat Stories, recognized as supplementary material, it is not directly adapted from the main narrative of the manga. Instead, it elaborates on the events surrounding the Sabaody Archipelago Arc, a key point in the One Piece saga, by focusing on perspectives and small details that don’t make it into the manga. Many fans argue that material outside the manga, unless officially accepted as canon by the creator, falls into a gray area that often leans toward filler.

Bridging the gap before the series’ return

Since the main One Piece anime will be on hold until April 2025, One Piece Fan Letters serves as an additional project aimed at keeping viewers engaged during the hiatus. It is widely seen as a complement to bridge this gap. With no major impact on the ongoing storyline or upcoming arcs, the special is more of a celebratory addition than an essential episode for continuity. Fans can enjoy exploring the Straw Hat characters, but feel free to skip it without missing out on important developments when One Piece reboots.
