Shelley Duvall, famous for her roles in films like The Shining and Nashville, died on Thursday at the age of 75. The cause of death has been reported to be complications of diabetes, and Duvall’s partner confirmed the unfortunate news. The actress was present at her Texas home when she breathed her last. Duvall died just days after celebrating her birthday on July 7.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress’ boyfriend said, “My sweet, loving, wonderful life partner and friend has left us. We’ve suffered a lot lately; now she’s free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley.”
Who was Shelley Duvall?
Born on July 7, 1949, this Texas girl wanted to study science after graduating from high school. While Duvall was looking for courses in this field, she was discovered by crew members of Robert Altman’s film Brewster McCloud. The actress auditioned and was cast for her role in the film. This was Duvall’s first onscreen appearance.
After her first role in the film, Duvall played several roles in the following drama films, such as Thieves Like Us, and got her breakthrough role in The Shining. The Hollywood star was awarded the Guinness Book of World Records for the most retakes in a film.
Speaking to People magazine, Duvall recalled receiving praise from her director. She said, “After Thieves Like Us, Robert looked at me and said, ‘I knew you were good, but I didn’t know you were great.'”
The Annie Hall actress also shared details about setting the record for the most retakes. She claimed, “(Kubrick) doesn’t print anything until at least the 35th take. 35 takes, running, crying and holding a little baby; it gets tough, and doing a full performance from the first rehearsal. It’s tough.”
