Karan Johar’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is one of the biggest Bollywood blockbusters ever, with six lead actors working together. Recently, filmmaker Nikhil Advani, who was the assistant director on the film, recalled some entertaining behind-the-scenes moments of shooting the iconic song Bole Chudiyan. He mentioned that Shah Rukh Khan was waiting for Hrithik Roshan, who inquired about Kareena Kapoor before leaving for the film, which led to a light-hearted moment on the sets.
In a candid interview with Filmfare, Nikhil Advani talked about the filming of the popular song Bole Chudiyan, which has become a popular song at Indian weddings.
The filmmaker recalled some interesting moments from the sets and mentioned the challenge of coordinating logistics between six of Bollywood’s biggest stars: Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan.
Advani shared that multiple vanity vans were deployed on the set for each actor, and he had to ensure that everyone was ready for the shoot. However, this seemingly simple task turned into a challenge as none of the artists were willing to leave their van, with each asking about the whereabouts of the other. Despite the brightly lit and beautifully decorated set resembling a Diwali celebration, the crew was left wondering when the actors would arrive.
Recalling that scene, the Salaam-e-Ishq director said, “I went, and I told Kajol that the shot was ready, she asked, ‘Has Shahrukh come?’ I said no. She says, ‘If you ask him to come, I will come.’ When I go to Shahrukh, he asks, ‘Has Hrithik come?’ ‘Tell him to come, then I will come.’ I go to Hrithik and he asks, ‘Has Bebo come? Tell her to come, and then I will come.’ When I go to Jaya ji, she asks, ‘Has the old man come?’ So no one came.”
Since he couldn’t tell any of them to get out, the filmmaker devised another way to solve the confusion. He gathered other assistant directors and stationed each of them outside a different actor’s vanity van. Equipped with walkie-talkies, he coordinated to ensure that all the artists came out together.
Advani then informed Jaya Bachchan about the plan and assured her that everyone would reach the set together. His plan worked and the shooting finally started.
Nikhil highlighted that after coming on the sets, the actors shared a good bond and worked professionally. As a result, the shooting experience was good and there was a happy atmosphere on the set. He revealed that the actors complimented each other, joked and enjoyed working together. Advani told that Jaya Bachchan and Kajol also talked in Bengali language.
However, he said that Karan Johar, who directed the film, fainted towards the end of the shooting after giving instructions to the crew members on the walkie-talkie while managing the large multi-starrer cast. Despite the chaos, it was a memorable experience that resulted in one of Bollywood’s most iconic wedding songs.
