Meta-owned WhatsApp offers a number of features and services for a secure and smooth messaging experience, including end-to-end encryption, scam prevention, background filters for video calls, and features like status likes and private mentions. However, when it comes to personalization, WhatsApp feels somewhat limited in its traditionally offered options. But now, WhatsApp is planning to introduce more customization options with a new custom chat themes feature.

According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has started beta testing of its new custom chat theme feature. This will allow users to personalize their conversations. Initially reported in August, the feature is now rolling out to WhatsApp beta users.

Currently, WhatsApp allows users to switch between the system default, light, and dark themes. However, with this new update, Android users in the Google Play beta program – starting with WhatsApp version 2.24.21.34 – will gain access to a range of new customization options, including 22 different chat themes and 20 color variations.

Once the feature is available, users will find a new “Chat Theme” settings page where they can change the theme for individual chats. This page will contain settings to customize both the chat color and background wallpaper.

Users will also be able to set a default theme for all conversations to maintain a uniform look across the app or select different themes for specific chats. Additionally, the update will allow users to apply a complementary chat color every time they choose a new theme. For those wanting even more control, WhatsApp will enable users to manually adjust the chat color for each conversation, providing a unique and personalized experience. Notably, these changes will remain private—visible only to the user who made them. Recipients will not see any customization, allowing personal expression without impacting others’ message experience.

As far as availability is concerned, this exciting feature is reportedly still in beta testing. A limited number of beta testers on Android have received the update, and it is also being released to iOS users with WhatsApp version 24.20.71. However, even some beta users will not see this feature immediately, as it will be released in the coming days.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp recently launched a new tool for video calls. Users can now apply filters to their video calls with ten different options like Warm, Cool and Dreamy, allowing creative expression. Additionally, WhatsApp has also introduced a background customization option, allowing users to change what they see behind them with options ranging from cozy living rooms to beach settings or using a blur effect for privacy. Gives.

Apart from filters and backgrounds, WhatsApp has also added touch up feature. A low light option is now also available to improve video clarity in dim settings and ensure a bright, vibrant display. Users can access these features by tapping on the Effects icon during a call.
