WhatsApp has banned more than 97 lakh Indian accounts in February 2025 to violate the terms and conditions of the forum. The Meta -owned company took this action as part of its efforts to address online scams, fraud and increasing cases of misuse on stage in India. While most accounts were banned after user reports, more than 14 million of them were constantly banned before receiving any report.
According to the latest monthly safety report of WhatsApp, 9,967,000 Indian accounts were banned after IT Rule 2021. Rules are mandatory for digital platforms to handle user complaints and take preventive measures against harmful activities. Scanning over 500 million Indian accounts, the company revealed that in February 2025, WhatsApp received 17,649 users complaints, causing action against 427 accounts. Additionally, the forum complied with two instructions from India’s complaint appellate committee.
Earlier in January, WhatsApp had banned more than 99 lakh Indian accounts for violating the integrity of the platform, and a similar number was banned in February. The high number of restricted accounts reflect the limit of fraud activity, spam and other violations on the stage in India. Given that India is a major market for WhatsApp with over 500 million users, platform assures users that it takes their privacy seriously. It regularly identifies suspicious behavior such as mass messages, unauthorized automatic activity, and its policies repeatedly violate and take action against them.

- Most importantly, WhatsApp advises users to avoid violating the rules of the platform – such as false information, harassment, or illegal activities. Failing to comply with these guidelines can lead to an account ban.
