Prime Minister Narendra Modi is ready to go on a two -day state trip to Mauritius on Tuesday to follow the 57th National Day celebrations of the island nation as the chief guest. During the Prime Minister’s visit, India and Mauritius are set to lay out of agreements to carry forward economic and security relations.

A contingent of the Indian Armed Forces will also participate in the festivals, as well as the warship of the Indian Navy and the Akash Ganga Skidoving Team of the Indian Navy.

Talking about PM Modi’s visit, his Mauritius counterpart, Navinchandra Ramgulam said, “This is really a unique privilege for our country to host such a specific personality, which is inspired to live here as our very tight program and his recent trips to Paris and United States, he is agreed to stay here.”

He said, “PM Narendra Modi’s visit is a testimony to close relations between our two countries.”

What on the agenda

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, several memorandum (MUS) will be exchanged between the two sides during the visit. Apart from this, Prime Minister Modi and Ramgulam will also hold extensive talks.

In a media briefing on Saturday, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that the Indian Navy and Mauritius officials would sign a technical agreement on the exchange of information on white shipping during the Prime Minister’s visit.

He said, “It will enable Indian and Mauritius officials to prevent illegal activities and to cooperate in improving Mauritius’ domain awareness in the region,” he said.

Both sides will also sign several agreements in the field of capacity building, bilateral trade, will deal with financial crimes crossing the border and promote small and medium enterprises, he said.

According to Misri, the Indian National Center will sign a memorandum (MoU) to create a framework to cooperate in Ocean Information Services and Mauritius Prime Minister’s Prime Minister’s Office Maritime Zone Management and Ocean Overview and Research.

PM Modi will also join Ramgulam during the inauguration of a Civil Service College and a health center built with Indian grants.

India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Mauritius’s Financial Crime Commission will sign the MoU for combating financial offenses during Modi’s visit. The purpose of Pact is to increase cooperation in intelligence and technical assistance to combat money laundering and related crimes.

Indian Prime Minister will also meet senior dignitaries and leaders of political parties and will interact with members of the Indian origin community.

Describing Mauritius as a close maritime neighbor, Misri said that India had the privilege of being a favorite development partner for the island nation.

Indo-India Relations

The western Indian Ocean of India has a close and long relationship with the nation of Mauritius, an island nation. One of the main reasons for special relations is that about 70 percent of the population of the island nation among people of Indian origin is 1.2 million (1.2 million).

Since 2005, India has been one of the largest trading partners in Mauritius. For the financial year 2022-2023, Indian exports to Mauritius were US $ 462 million, while Mauritius’s exports to India were USD 91.50 million. The total trade volume was 554 million USD.

According to official data, trade between the two countries has increased by 132 percent in the last 17 years, from USD 206 million in 2005-06 to US $ 554 million in 2022-23.

In addition, sea security and cooperation between the two sides have also increased considerably in the last decade. India has helped to expand a strategic airstrip and jetty on the next, one of the outer islands of Mauritius, one of the outer islands of Mauritius, to enhance the country’s capacity to monitor its huge exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of 2.3 million sq km.
