2023 was a year of culinary adventure for India, and our food choices say a lot about our tastes, preferences and perhaps even our cravings. Online food delivery app Swiggy has revealed that our taste buds are kept busy throughout the year. Swiggy released its ‘Annual Trends Report: How India Swiggy’d 2023’ for the 8th consecutive year and revealed some interesting facts from the year about which food items Indians ordered the most, how much, from where and for how much .

Who ordered what and where?

From the bustling streets of Mumbai to the heart of Delhi, food lovers across India were busy placing orders. Over 6.6 million unique dishes were available on Swiggy’s menus across the country. While some users were searching for “Swiggy” or “order” on Swiggy – 5028 and 1682 respectively, they did not find what they were looking for.

Ranked stars of 2023:

A man in Mumbai surprisingly managed to collect food orders worth Rs 42.3 lakh – now that’s an appetite! But it wasn’t just the big cities; Even in small towns like Jhansi, a lot of food was ordered and one user ordered 269 items in a single order for a party.

The dish that stole the show

With over 7.7 million orders, Gulab Jamun wins over Roshogulla during Durga Puja. Masala Dosa stole the show as the top vegetarian order across all nine days of Navratri. In Hyderabad, Idli took the crown after spending Rs 6 lakh on it. With 2.5 biryani orders per second, biryani continued its reign as the most ordered dish for the eighth consecutive year.

The city that emerged as the ‘Cake Capital’

Bangalore holds the title of ‘Cake Capital’ with 8.5 million orders of chocolate cakes. India ordered 271 cakes per minute during Valentine’s Day.

New Surprising Recipes:

Vegans rejoice as vegan orders rise by 146% on Swiggy GuiltFree. The battle between Japanese and Korean cuisine was won by the anime, with Japanese cuisine receiving 2 times more orders.

Eating out and saving:

Swiggy One and One Lite users enjoyed savings of over Rs 900 crore, while Swiggy Dineout users saved a whopping Rs 300 crore. Instamart enthusiasts ordered from ‘Insta-pur’, the world’s 17th most populous city, and one user in Jaipur placed 67 orders in a single day. Delivery of instant noodles in Delhi takes only 65 seconds!

As we bid goodbye to 2023, these statistics and insights tell the story of a year that celebrated diverse flavors and the evolving food culture across India.
