Weekly Survey: Would you buy the Motorola Razr 50 or Razr 50 Ultra?

Must read

Motorola unveiled the Razr 50 series in China and the global announcement came a few hours later. T-Mobile US is already hyping its exclusive hot pink Razr+, while Amazon India is preparing for a local launch. Now there’s just one question – will you buy it?

First, let’s meet the competitors. The Motorola Razr 50 Ultra, known as the Moto Razr+ 2024 in the US, comes with the same IPX8 water resistance rating as its predecessor, an even larger 4-inch cover display, a slightly bigger and faster battery (4,000mAh, 45W wired, 15W wireless), a more powerful Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset, and better cameras (50MP 1/1.95” main, 50MP 2x portrait camera).

Weekly Survey: Would you buy the Motorola Razr 50 or Razr 50 Ultra?

The Razr 50 Ultra/Razr+ 2024 (12/512GB) is priced at USD 1,000/CAD 1,300/EUR 1,200. Expensive, but the Honor Magic V Flip is the only phone that can challenge it in terms of cover display size, and that phone isn’t coming to the US. The Galaxy Z Flip6 is coming with a larger cover display than its predecessor (and soon), but it looks like it won’t be able to keep up with Moto. If the rumored prices turn out to be true, the Galaxy Clamshell will be even more expensive than the Razr. For more details on the phone, check out our Motorola Razr 50 Ultra review.

Weekly Survey: Would you buy the Motorola Razr 50 or Razr 50 Ultra?

The Motorola Razr 50, known as the Moto Razr 2024 in the US, is the more affordable model and addresses many of our biggest complaints about the Razr 40. Let’s start with the cover display – the tiny line display is gone, replaced by a 3.6-inch panel that looks more or less the same as the Razr 40 Ultra. And it has an IPX8 rating instead of the basic water-repellent design of last year’s model.

The phone uses the Dimensity 7300X chipset, which is a moderate upgrade over the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, and has a 4,200mAh battery with 30W charging and (this time) 15W wireless charging. The 50MP main camera is the same as the Ultra, but there’s no tele module here, only a 13MP ultra wide (the Ultra, on the other hand, doesn’t have an ultra wide).

Motorola Razr 50 (Razr 2024)

The Motorola Razr 50/Razr 2024 will be available in the US for USD 700. It will be launched in other regions (Europe, South America, Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific), but details on those will come later.

We don’t yet know the actual price or specifications of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 (although leaks have given a fairly complete picture). Honor hasn’t said if the Magic V Flip will launch internationally. The same goes for Huawei and the Pocket 2.

There are phones like the Nubia Flip and Blackview Hero 10, which could challenge the vanilla Razr 50. The Nubia Flip is going global (targeting several markets, including the US) with a base price of $500 for an 8/256GB unit. The phone uses SD 7 Gen 1 and a 1.43” circular cover display, making it closer to the Razr 40 rather than the 50. The main display is a 6.9” 120Hz OLED panel. The Flip has a 50MP camera on the back and a surprisingly large 4,310mAh battery with 33W wired-only charging. Nothing special, but it’s one of the most affordable foldables you can get.

It competes with the Blackview Hero 10, which costs €400 (about $425). However, this is a 4G phone with a Helio G99. It has an impressive camera – 108MP (1/1.67”) sensor in the main and 8MP ultra-wide, as well as a 32MP selfie. The 4,000mAh battery with 45W charging is also pretty good.

Oppo and Vivo may bring their flip phones before the end of the year, but right now the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra/Razr+ 2024 doesn’t have much competition. Is it the right flip foldable phone for you?

As for the Motorola Razr 50/Razr 2024, it already has some competition. But maybe the Razr 50 is the best choice for your next phone – right?
