Yes, you heard that right! Filmmaker Payal Kapadia’s debut feature film, All We Imagine as Light, has made the nation proud by winning the Grand Prix award at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. The film is now set to open the 2024 edition of the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, premiering on October 18. Starring Kani Kushruti, Divya Prabha and Chhaya Kadam, the film is co-produced by Petit Chaos (France), Chalk & Cheese. and Another Birth (India), distributed by Spirit Media. As reported by PTI, anticipation is growing for its theatrical release across India in November.
The Malayalam-Hindi film All We Imagine as Light, courtesy Rana Daggubati’s production house Spirit Media, premiered across select theaters in Kerala on September 21. This official India-France collaboration, which includes Chalk & Cheese Films and Another Birth from India as well as France’s Minor Anarchy, made its theatrical debut in France on 2 October.
Payal Kapadia, who created history as the first Indian filmmaker to win the prestigious Grand Prix at Cannes in May, expressed her excitement for the film’s release across India. According to PTI, he shared, “I’m very excited for the release in India this November! I hope a lot of people go to watch it. It’s an amazing feeling for any filmmaker.”
Set in Mumbai, the story revolves around three women – nurse Prabha, her younger roommate Anu and hospital cook Parvati. Their lives become intertwined when they embark on an unexpected journey to Ratnagiri, causing them to reflect on their personal choices.
Running from October 19 to 24, 2024, the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival promises to be a celebration of global cinema, featuring over 110 films across 50+ languages across a variety of genres and formats. With its inaugural film highlighting Mumbai, the festival is set to be a cinematic spectacle.
