WATCH: Celine Dion makes surprise appearance at hockey event amid health troubles
Celine Dion took the stage to announce the Montreal Canadiens’ fifth overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. It was dubbed the most dramatic announcement ever.

During the 2024 NHL Draft on June 28, the Montreal Canadiens brought Celine Dion on stage to announce their fifth overall draft pick.
Introduced by Montreal general manager Kent Hughes as “our No. 1 fan,” Dion revealed that the team had selected 18-year-old Russian player Ivan Demidov. It was a surprise because the musician had been on a break since his diagnosis of stiff person syndrome. Celine sent her fans into a frenzy when she appeared at this year’s Grammys to announce and present the award for album of the year.
Dionne’s dramatic pause prior to the announcement was noted by NHL announcers as “the most dramatic draft announcement ever”.

Dion was accompanied by his 23-year-old son, René-Charles Dion Angélil, also known as R.C. Angélil.
Recently, Celine Dion shared her struggle with Stiff Person Syndrome in her documentary ‘I Am: Celine Dion’, which premiered on Prime Video.
The documentary shows her struggling with painful spasms caused by a rare neurological disorder. Despite these challenges, reports suggest the singer’s comeback could come sooner than expected.
