The popular snack soya chaap has become an integral part of our food culture, and the number of its fans is only growing by the day. This vegetarian alternative to the traditional meat-based kebab has become a staple in menus across the country, from street vendors to high-end restaurants. Its versatility has given rise to creative variations like rolls, wraps, and even salads. But have you ever wondered how this delicious dish is made? A video recently shared online by a food vlogger takes us behind the scenes of soya chaap production. However, instead of satisfying our curiosity, it has made many of us question our love for this snack! The video reveals a very unhealthy process, which has sparked a heated debate on the Internet.

The footage began with an old, industrial-sized mixer grinder mixing soybeans into a pulp. A worker then mixed the watery slurry with his bare hands, submerging his arms up to the elbows. The water was drained off, and the soya chunks were transferred to a bucket – again, handled with bare hands, without gloves. The worker then laid a mat on the floor, rinsed it with water, and stepped on it while wearing slippers. The soya mixture was poured onto the mat, and the worker continued mixing it while walking on the mat while wearing slippers. The chaap was then rolled up and shipped to markets.
The vlogger named this unhealthy product as “Chappal Chaap” instead of Soya Chaap. He said in his video that such unhealthy habits are harmful to our health and the health of our families. The caption of the video reads, “Be aware, stay safe, eat healthy.” Watch the video here:
“India needs strict food guidelines with penalties. In India companies and local vendors are allowed to sell poison in any form. Why is life so cheap in India,” a user commented below the post.
Another wrote, “My heart is broken [my heart is broken]….I like soya chaap very much.”
One comment read, “I will never eat anything like this after today.”
Meanwhile, someone else said that not everyone makes the dish in an unhygienic manner. “Are you sure you make it the same way!? It’s sad to see your video. Let me tell you, not everyone makes it this way.”
