Kalamkaval starring Mammootty and Vinayakan in the lead roles is set for theatrical release on November 27, 2025. Debutant Jitin K. Directed by Jose, the filmmaker revealed that the team had initially planned to cast Prithviraj Sukumaran as the co-lead instead of the Jailer actor.
Were Kalamkaval makers the first to approach Prithviraj Sukumaran?
Speaking to radio station Club FM, director Jithin K. Jose revealed that the team first pitched Kalamkaval to Prithviraj Sukumaran, having envisioned him in the role which eventually went to Vinayakan.
Jithin said, “We had two characters in mind, one was Mamukka, the other was Prithvi. This was the possibility we had considered first, and we presented it to him (Prithviraj). While we never mentioned Mamukka’s name, Prithviraj himself had suggested that Megastar would be the right choice for the second character. Then we told him that we also had a similar idea.”
He further added, “We first pitched the character that Vinayakan now plays to Prithviraj. However, there were some complicated processes in between. When we approached Mamukka and he accepted the project, naturally, the film became a Mammootty starrer. The dynamics changed, and the priority was clearly given to him and his availability.”
The filmmaker further added, “As we had planned the entire shoot around Mammootty’s dates, we could not get Prithviraj’s dates, especially due to the assignments of L2: Empuran. Then, we started looking for other potential actors and finally, Mamukka suggested that we approach Vinayakan.”

Kalamkaval is an upcoming crime thriller starring Mammootty as the lead antagonist and Vinayakan as the protagonist.
Jithin K with Jishnu Srikumar. Co-written and directed by Jose, the film revolves around a Special Investigation Team (SIT) that goes to a border village to resolve a dispute between two communities, but discover something more sinister lurking in the shadows.
Apart from the lead cast, the film stars Gibin Gopinath, Gayatri Arun, Rajisha Vijayan, Aravind SK, Shruti Ramachandran and many others in lead roles.
