‘Wanted to Crawl Into a Hole’: Luke Combs remembers when Tracy Chapman claimed he messed up the lyrics to her song while recording her cover.

Country artist Luke Combs recorded a cover of Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car, which recently earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Country Solo Performance. He admitted that he had thrown a song away and it was Champman who pointed out his mistake.

In the middle of his recent concert, Combs recalled the mistake that will always haunt him. In a TikTok video posted by a concertgoer, the singer revealed that instead of singing the lyric “We’ve got to make a decision”, she accidentally recorded it as “We still have to make a decision”. He told the crowd that he came to this realization during a conversation with Chapman.

“That was the first time I realized I had recorded the song wrong,” he recalled. “It was she who was telling me. Because I remember when she said that, I wanted to crawl in a hole.” Luckily, she was cool about it, yet he couldn’t help but think about it whenever he sang the song. “I’ll think about it every time I sing this song for the rest of my life,” he said.

Combs then informed attendees that he would be singing the original version and strumming his recorded version. “So tonight, I’m going to sing ‘We Have to Make a Decision.’ Because Tracy Chapman told me, and damn, I’m going to do it,” he added. The Grammy-nominated singer released his cover of the iconic 1988 country song in April 2023, and it quickly became a fan favorite. Went.

It reached no. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, topped the country music charts and earned the singer numerous accolades. At the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in February, Combs—who was nominated that night—performed the song with Ozzy producer, Chapman. Speaking to Billboard before his performance, Billboard said he was happy to see that people were still enjoying the song 30 years later.

She said at the time, “I never expected to find myself on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there.” “I’m happy for Luke and his success and grateful that new fans have found and embraced ‘Fast Car,'” Chapman said.
