However, before handing over your old iPhone, you need to do a few things, such as backing up your data and wiping the old phone clean. This ensures that your personal information is removed, and your device is ready for its new owner. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to prepare your old iPhone for exchange:

Backups are important

First and foremost, back up your data. Backing up your data ensures that your contacts, photos, messages, and other important information are safe and can be easily transferred to your new device. Additionally, if your iPhone is reset or there is a problem during the trade-in process, your data will be safe and can be restored on your new iPhone 16.

You can save your data to an external device or back up your iPhone using iCloud or your computer.

How to back up data on iPhone using iCloud

  • Go to your iPhone’s Settings app.
  • Tap your name at the top.
  • Select iCloud.
  • Tap iCloud Backup.
  • Make sure the switch is on, then tap Back up now.
  • This process will create a backup of your iPhone’s data to iCloud. Once the backup is done, you will be able to easily restore your data on your new iPhone.

Sign out of iCloud and Apple services

Before exchanging, sign out of iCloud and other Apple services. Signing out ensures that your personal information will remain private and the new owner will not be able to access your accounts.

How to sign out

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap your name.
  • Scroll down and tap Sign out.
  • To turn off Find My iPhone, enter your Apple ID password, then confirm.
  • Back up Apple Watch data
  • Also, unpair your devices, including the Apple Watch and earbuds. Backing up your watch’s data will also allow you to restore it on your new iPhone.

To unpair your Apple Watch:

  • Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  • Tap All Clocks in the upper-left corner.
  • Tap the information button (i) on the front of your watch.
  • Select Unpair Apple Watch and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Also, turn off Find My iPhone
  • Turning off Find My iPhone disconnects it from your Apple ID and prevents anyone else from using your iPhone.

To turn off Find My iPhone

  • Go to Settings.
  • Tap your name, then choose Find My.
  • Tap on Find My iPhone and turn it off.

Finally, factory reset your iPhone. After backing up your iPhone, it’s time to erase all content and settings.

How to reset your iPhone?

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap General.
  • Scroll down and select Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  • Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  • Enter your passcode and Apple ID password to confirm.
