As a treatment for the Vishu festival, three Malayalam films entered the Kerala box office ring on 10 April with various tons, styles and expectations. As soon as the dust freezes after 12 days, it is clear that Alappuzha Gymkhana sprayed in the back of the competition, conquering the heart of the audience, which was clicked later by day 2. What is happening with these films at the box office right now and what is going to be the final decision.
Despite the superstar Mammootha factor, a hit stylish Bazuka, directed by the newcomer Dino Dennis, saw an immediate dip in an explosive day of Rs 3.25 crore. The game-thriller, although was attractive in execution, was allowed down by a weak script and lack of emotional engagement. Even the screen appearance of Mammooty could not save the film from the weight of unbearable dialogues and an old story. On Monday, it was successful for only 20 lakh rupees.
On the other hand, Basil Joseph’s Marana month started as a Dalit with just Rs 1.05 crore on day 1. However, its dark comedy tone, impressive performance and unique story gave it some breathing rooms. This through low, maintains continuity in terms of number, due to the audience that enjoy offbeat narratives. Although there was no mass blockbuster, which was expected, this Towino Thomas avoided the flick to collapse and so far pulled for Rs 11.25 crore.
Now coming to the clear winner Alappuzha Gymkhana of this Visu box office battle, it had all the right material: fresh face, an energetic sports drama setup, and music that well echoed. Despite not having a day 1 topping, the film beat the rest from day 2 with Rs 2.70 crore and never looked back as it was collected more than that number for about a week. Each passing day confirmed its strong word-mouth. Standing footfalls speak for the ability to connect with the film’s family audience and youth. By day 12, it is long with Rs 31.45 crore.
The day-wise box office collections of Alappuzha Gymkhana, Mernamas and Bajukka are as follows:

In comparison, Bazuka faded due to poor writing, and Marana Mass remained niche, while Alappuzha Gymkhana was successful in keeping the right raga in demographic and maintaining speed through real appeal. Numbers are speaking themselves.
Finally, three films entered with discussion, but only one got permanent love from the audience and that is Alappuzha Gymkhana. The material, yet, proves to be the king.
