Vir Das created history as the first Indian to host the International Emmy Awards. During his monologue at the 52nd International Emmys held in New York on November 25, he humorously referenced actor Will Smith’s infamous Oscar slap incident, while addressing OTT platforms for the low broadcast visibility of the Emmys. Veer shared the video on his Instagram handle on Tuesday.

Referencing Hollywood icon Will Smith’s infamous 2022 Oscar Awards moment – where Smith slapped Chris Rock for Jada Pinkett Smith’s joke – Vir Das urged OTT platforms to stream the Emmys next year.

In his speech he said, “All the major platforms are here and, humbly, I think that next year, one of you should actually broadcast this show. What do you think?” The warriors continued moving forward amid the cheers of the crowd. “Who’s Will Smith going to have to slap tonight to get our attention, guys?”

Additionally, Vir Das shared a series of photos from the Emmys, in which he credited his stylist, designer and other individuals who helped him achieve this feat.

His caption read, “First time an Indian hosted the International Emmys @iemmys, he wore his old sneakers because he was nervous. He wore @salookalife designed by the brand new young designer @thegirlwhostiched from Delhi. Them Styled by stylist @shreejarajgopal, who went through many emails to find the right designer for the launch, she wore jewels by @hanut101 and a green tie by DPS “Wanted to remind @sarthak_kher (sic).”

Vir Das chose a monochrome ensemble, which was designed by Delhi-based designer Shubhangi Bajpayee. They were selected by Das’s team from over 4,000 entries. He had also shared a heartfelt post expressing his gratitude towards him.
