Tamil superhit film Maharaja, directed by Nithilan Saminathan, is set for theatrical release in China on November 29, 2024. Starring Vijay Sethupathi, Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas and Natarajan Subramaniam, Maharaja was released in Indian theaters on June 14, 2024. And it was appreciated by both critics and audiences alike. The film was produced by Passion Studios, Think Studios and The Root.

The distribution is led by Yi Shi Films and Alibaba Pictures, marking an important milestone for Tamil cinema in the Chinese market. Maharaja has already earned praise for its entertaining narrative, mesmerizing visuals and evocative music. This international release aims to expand its reach and introduce Chinese audiences to the storytelling tradition of Tamil cinema. Home Screen Entertainment and Nine Knots Entertainment played a key role in facilitating the partnership between Yi Shi Films and Alibaba Pictures.

Yi Xi Films representative Alexey Wu shared his excitement in a statement. “We are proud to bring Maharaja to theaters in China and share the artistry of Tamil cinema with new audiences,” he said.

Producer Sudhan Sundaram of Passion Studios expressed similar sentiments, emphasizing the film’s universal appeal. He said, “The film has emotional content with an engaging script that will definitely thrill Chinese audiences.”

The release of the film in China will be accompanied by special promotions and events across the country, aimed at engaging film lovers and celebrating inter-cultural exchange between Indian and Chinese cinema. Following its release, the film grossed Rs 71.3 crore nett domestically, while its international collections contributed around Rs 25 crore, underscoring its wide appeal. Despite competition from major releases like Kalki’s 2898 AD, Maharaja emerged as a lead performer, becoming one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of 2024.

The film is currently streaming on Netflix.
