Vidhu Vinod Chopra: National Awards are given too much importance
Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra believes that ‘too much importance’ is given to the National Awards. He also shared his views on his film 12th Fail not being selected for the Oscars.

Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra shares his views on how thrillers often do not make it to the National Awards. He also mentioned that many people felt that his film, 12th Fail, starring Vikrant Massey, should have represented India at the Oscars last year instead of the Malayalam film, 2018.
Speaking at IFFI GoaVidhu Vinod Chopra discussed his 1989 film Parinda when an attendee asked why thrillers don’t get National Awards. Chopra replied, “You are giving too much importance to national awards.”
The filmmaker then admitted that even people in Hollywood believed that 12th Fail should have represented India at the 96th Academy Awards.
“Many people, including people from Hollywood, have told me that 12th Fail should have represented India at the Oscars,” he shared.
The filmmaker further added, “But do I care? All I care about is – did I make a good movie or did I not make a good movie? Please don’t give so much importance (to awards). There are people outside the awards (industry) who are acknowledging you, for God knows whatever reason. So please don’t worry.”
